In the world of education, it’s impossible to go into being a headmaster in your first job; you need exposure on what it is like to work in a school at a lower level beforehand. You may have all of the qualifications in America that relate to education, but sitting in a classroom and being academic can be entirely different to the scenarios you would face while you run a school.

Nobody knows this better than Alexander Harvey IV, who has now been a successful headmaster in three different country day schools. He now acknowledges that when he had graduated from his Masters degree at Loyola University, he wouldn’t have been ready to embark on some of the demands that his headmaster role has of him. For example, could any fresh graduate fundraise $11 million for his school’s budget in a year, or bring a basketball team to success? It isn’t just the ability to be organized and to have good time management that is required to be a headmaster, but an ability to think outside the box, solve problems, move out of your comfort zone and take risks with key reforms.

The career ladder for Alexander Harvey IV started off when he was a middle school supervisor, overlooking the development of 500 students. At the time, this was a big ask for Mr. Harvey, but he was determined to develop into an educator who had the opportunity to become headmaster material – reading educational journals and expanding his knowledge further. This first job was quite a coup for Alexander Harvey IV, especially as his post was at one of the best-known country day schools in the country: the Charlotte Country Day school in North Carolina.

The motto of this school was to help students to build their character and establish their values. In some ways, working at the Charlotte Country Day School would be an opportunity for Alexander Harvey IV to learn lessons himself, especially in how to conduct himself as a teacher. Through countless hours of hard work and graft, he began to establish his personality as a teacher and a colleague, while also realizing one of the core values that have formed his legacy: his love for country day schools. As seen in his work in recent decades, he is on a quest to strengthen and develop the potential of country day schools, and the public’s perception of them as a premier place for learning.
